Registration update and answers to FAQ’s

There is now less than two weeks until registration for the 59th season of Knights of Columbus Basketball on Saturday September 7 from 9-10:30 at St. Pat’s School at 158 Patrick Street. Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about registration. Question: I have heard that you have to be at the school at 4 am to get signed up is that true? Answer: No. In the past there have been some hardy souls that camped out overnight to be the first in line but that has not been the case for a number of years. We do recommend that you get there early, and we will make sure that the school is open as soon as possible to give those in line access to the washroom facilities. Question: What are the age cut off dates between divisions? Answer: The ages for all of our divisions this season is the age that the player will be on April 1, 2014. Question: I am going out of town that weekend. How can I get my child registered? Answer: We understand that this can happen, and we allow someone else to register your child on registration day. They will need proof of age and the registration fee. You will still need to sign the permission form since we can’t allow someone else to do that on your behalf. Please do not ask members of our league executive to do this for you. Question: I would like to coach this season – how do I do that? Answer: We have a volunteer table at registration where you can sign up to volunteer. Any adult volunteer must have a police background check before they can assume that role. We do not require student volunteers to have a police check. We are fortunate to have many long service coaches in our organization so you may not be able to coach in the division your child plays in, but we do need help with timing, scoring and officiating on game nights.

On Friday, July 5 the league held its annual fund raising golf tournament at the Inverary Golf and Country Club. Special thanks go out to event organizers Rick and Heather Hollywood for collecting prizes and for keeping the event part of our annual fund raising activities. Sarah Barnes Update

Sarah Barnes, one of the key volunteers in the Girls Division last season, is currently in Lithuania as a trainer with the Canadian Under 19 Women’s Basketball Team. Below is a note that we received from Sarah this week. The photos sent by Sarah have been posted separately on our Facebook page.

“Thanks for your note. We have advanced to the second round and play China, the US and host Lithuania over the next three days. We have to win 2 of the next three to advance to the medal round. Overall, the play has been great. it makes me excited to get back to the knights of Columbus in the fall! Thanks for following the team! I have attached a few pictures

All the best, I hear Kingston is sticky these days! Back in August to gear up for the fall,

Sarah”

Mike Robertson

We are sad to report that Mike Robertson, a life long supporter of the Knights of Columbus Basketball League passed away this week. Mike was a volunteer coach for many years in our league and at Regiopolis, before becoming a referee until his health forced him to take a less demanding role in the organization. He was always a volunteer that preferred to stay in the background, and in this way, he was “Mr. Anonymous” with many donations of prizes to the Sneaker Draw every year, and doing anything necessary to help with the annual banquet. He will be missed by the league, and he will continue to serve as an example of the difference a dedicated volunteer can make in a community.

Visitation at Gordon F. Tompkins Funeral home on Colborne Street will be Thursday July 4 from 6-9 pm and the funeral service for Mike will be on Friday July 5 at 1 pm at St. John’s Church on Patrick Street.
