Just 34 More Sleeps to Go!

It is hard to believe that the day we have been anticipating since the season wrapped up in March is now only 34 days away! Here are the answers to more frequently asked questions as we get closer to the big day. Frequently Asked Questions 1-4 were in an earlier post and are also on the web site. Full registration details are under “Events” both here and on the league Facebook Page.

5) What happens if I miss the player evaluation night? Will my child be “cut” from the program?
Answer: While we hope that all players come out for evaluation night, no one that is registered will be “cut”. All will be placed on a team, and you will be notified what team and the team practice time in the days following our September 19 coaches meeting.

6) What do I do if I find out that my child has a conflict with another activity or decides they don’t want to play this season?
Answer: Please notify us as soon as possible by e mail ([email protected]), by phone (613 548-8790), through the web site or Facebook page. We will likely have a waiting list in each division of players that want to play, and a decision on your part will get one of them into the league.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions Registration 2018

With only forty sleeps left before registration day 2018 we thought we would start our series of Frequently Asked Questions in advance of that event. Details of registration day are found under the events tab on the web site.

1) What are the game nights for the upcoming season? Answer: Monday Nights – Biddy at St. Francis of Assisi; Graduate at Ecole Cathedrale; Tuesday Nights- Little Guys at St. Francis of Assisi; Wednesday Nights – Girls Division at St. Francis of Assisi; Thursday Nights- Little Gals Division at St. Francis of Assisi. Graduate games start at 5:30 pm (3 games a night in one hour time slots), and all other divisions start at 6 pm with four games in 45 minute time slots.

2) I am going to be out of town on September 8 and you have no on line registration. How do I get my child registered?
Answer: If you are going to be away September 8 you can get someone else to start the registration process for you. They will need the name, date of birth, contact phone numbers, address and e mail address (if applicable) for your player, along with the $10 registration fee. They will be given a copy of the registration form that you will need to sign and bring with you to the player evaluation night. We must have a signed registration form before your child can participate in league activities. PLEASE DO NOT ASK MEMBERS OF OUR LEAGUE EXECUTIVE TO REGISTER YOUR CHILD FOR YOU. We are very busy on registration day looking after other details of the process.

2 a) Why don’t you have on line registration like other leagues? Answer: Having in person, first come, first served registration equalizes the opportunity for everyone in the community. We allow someone else to register your child as long as you make those arrangements as a concession to those that may need to be unavailable at registration time due to work or other commitments.

3) Can we request to be on the same team as another player?
Answer: Due to the large number of requests we receive each year, and our growing number of registrations, we can no longer assure you that player pairing requests will be granted, with the exception of siblings in the same age group, and where a DEFINITE need to ride together has been established and communicated. It has been overwhelming for our volunteers to accommodate these large number of requests while trying to build fair and balanced teams. We believe that this approach keeps us in line with the practice of most other youth organizations. We see our program as a great opportunity for family members and players to meet new friends and neighbours from across our community, establishing friendships that may last for years to come.

4) Can we request to be on a specific coach’s team?
Answer: No, you may not request a coach. The only exception to this rule is if you are an assistant for that coach.

Barry Chambers

It is with sadness that I post that a member of the basketball league family of volunteers, former Biddy Division coach Barry Chambers, has passed away. Along with coaching in the league, Barry was a former reporter, an avid bowler, and fisherman, but most of all, a dedicated husband, father and grandfather. Our sympathies to all of Barry’s family and friends at your sudden and tragic loss.

Don “Pete” Petersen

It was four years ago today that we lost the founder of the basketball league when Don Petersen passed away. He was so much more than that to those that knew him. He was a mentor, a friend, a confidant, someone to talk with, someone that loved life, and loved being around children and adults at play in all the forms that play takes. He loved his school, and he loved being in the gym that had his name. Pete was quiet most of the time, but made his opinions known when they needed to be. He inspired those around him during his life and he continues to do that today. All of us involved in his league miss him, but we remain committed to the dream he had when he threw open the doors of the St Pat’s gym and invited the children on the hill in to play some basketball. We will continue to give the children of the community a safe and affordable place to learn the game of basketball, and how much fun participating in those games can be. We are also committed to reminding our participants that there was a great person behind the name of the league, and the name of the gym where we play the games. Don “Pete” Petersen was a real person and he continues to be loved, respected and missed.

Don “Pete” Petersen Memorial Golf Tournament

On Friday the annual Don “Pete” Petersen Memorial Golf Tournament was held at the Glen Lawrence Golf and Country Club with 84 participants enjoying a great day under clear blue skies. Thanks to the generosity of the participants and the many individuals and businesses that sponsored holes and contributed prizes for the event, along with the professionalism and commitment of the Glen Lawrence management and staff to making the day a success, more than $5000 was raised for the basketball league. This is our best total ever, and we owe a special thanks to the organizing committee that made it all happen this year.
Everyone involved at all levels has made a difference in the lives of the children in our community through your participation. Thank you for believing in what we do, and thank you for helping us keep Pete’s dream alive.
A full list of prize donors and hole sponsors will be coming soon.

Queen’s School of Kinesiology Looking for Study Participants.

We have been approached by Alexandra Walters from the Queen’s School of Kinesiology looking for players 11-17 to participate in a study that she is conducting. Here is her introduction and contact information, as well as a poster for the study. We have partnered with the school of Kinesiology in the past for their research work, so we hope that you will support this study as well. Note that there is a financial incentive as well.

“Dear parents and guardians,

The Revved Up Research Group within the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies is calling for youth (ages 10-17 years) to participate in an ongoing research project. This project is focused on physical activity promotion for children and youth using evidence-based guidelines.

In brief, the commitment is a one-time appointment where your child comes into the lab space for approximately 60 minutes and participates in some eye-tracking activities and completes a survey. As compensation, $15 cash is provided.

If this study seems of interest, please email [email protected] for more information.

On behalf of the Revved Up Research Group, thank you.”
