Last night we had our coaches meeting, where teams were distributed and practice times assigned. Below is the practice schedule for next week. Coaches have been asked to call to notify what team players are on, and when they will practice. This process will take place in the next few days so please be patient and remember that our coaches are volunteers that will get the message to you as quickly as they can. Join us on Wednesday October 15 at Five Guys Burgers and Fries on Gardiners Road between 5 and 8:30 pm where $1 from every burger, poutine and milkshake sold will be donated back to the league from Five Guys. This has become an annual tradition with a great sponsor and believer in what we do for children in our community.

It will be a chance to forget about Thanksgiving leftovers for an evening and join the rest of the league supporters in the community to enjoy some delicious food together!

Now that the player evaluation process is completed, the divisional convenors will be getting together to build the teams. For those that missed their evaluation night, don’t worry, you will still be placed on a team.

NEXT WEEK, SEPTEMBER 15-18 – THERE IS NO ACTIVITY FOR PLAYERS.

Our Coaches Meeting is Wednesday September 17 at 7 pm, where the teams will be distributed. In the days following that meeting the coaches will notify their players as to what team they are on and when they practice the week of September 22 – 25. Remember that our coaches are volunteers and they will make their calls as work and studies allow.

When you get that call please remember to write down those two things – team and time for the practice.

We know that there were lots of friend and ride requests made but understand we cannot honour them all.

We have fielded, both verbally and in writing, a number of concerns about our registration practice of allowing others to register players, and the possibilities that this would be abused.

This practice was put in place many years ago to not disenfranchise parents and caregivers that are not able to attend in person registration because of work, illness or other commitments. There is a perception that this opportunity is being abused, and could be abused further in the future.

As an executive of this league that has been in operation for 71 seasons we have operated on the premise of mutual respect between our league families and those of us charged with the responsibility of operating the program.

We want you to know that we are committed to reviewing our registration practices in the months ahead, and putting unambiguous controls in place before our next season, and making those changes clearly communicated in advance of registration process. Congratulations Dylan Blackwell and Emily Rose Dean!!

We want to add our congratulations to Emily Rose Dean and Dylan Blackwell on their being the recipients of the Don “Pete” Petersen Spirit Award for 2025, presented by Pete’s family to recognize the contributions these two have made to the league. We wish them both well in their academic pursuits and hope they will continue to make a difference in the lives of those around them in the tears ahead, the same way they have throughout their involvement in Pete’s league.

The day we have all been waiting for since March is one short sleep away! Saturday September 6 is registration day, and details are below.

The weather forecast calls for a 40% chance of a light shower so please dress accordingly.

Special T shirts for this season will be available for purchase at $15 for short sleeved and $20 for long sleeve, and we will have Sneaker Draw tickets also available for purchase.

All transactions at registration are cash or cheque only.

This year we continue our tradition of offering a specially designed T shirt that will be available for sale starting Registration Day, with sales resuming from opening night until Monday October 20. The cost this year remains the same as it has been for many years, with short sleeve shirts available for $15 and long sleeve $20. These are cash or cheque purchases only. Should we run out of your size we will take your details and be placing a special order for delivery before we shut down in December. We hope you like our proud Canadian design this year.

For those of you that would like to purchase other clothing items as well, we encourage you to visit our on line store at the Acme Sport and Promotions web site where you can order 70th Anniversary hoodies and polo shirts, league logo hoodies, polo shirts, quarter zip sweatshirts, hats, toques, and jackets. The store will be open now until October 13, with orders available for pick up from Acme in early November. Ordering is simple, and we want to thank George Merjevac and Acme for the work they did with us to set up the store, and with our T shirt order again this year.

Wednesday we received a significant donation to help with canteen operating costs from a couple that wish to remain anonymous. While we will certainly respect that request, we still want them to know we appreciate what they have done, and want to publicly thank them for continuing to believe in what we do for the children in our community. This donation will help us to keep the canteen operating costs at the very affordable rates we have now. Roland

This morning I received an email from Sarah Ross, Assistant Women’s Volleyball Coach at Queen’s University, asking if we would be willing to accept a donation of gently used shoes from the team. Bridgette Mulholland, Assistant Coach for the Queen’s Women’s Basketball Team, and a former player in our program, had told Sarah about what we do, and the shoe donation the basketball team had made in the spring.

This afternoon Sarah, and the Head Women’s Volleyball Coach Shanice Marcelle delivered 23 pairs of shoes to us for use by our players as needed next season.

Our sincere thanks to Shanice and Sarah for believing in what we do for the children in our community. You are difference makers, and you should be VERY proud of that.
