Donations Update

On Monday night at the Graduate Division a local family that wishes to remain anonymous made a significant donation to the league to thank us for what we do for children in the community.

We continue be to be blown away by the generosity of families in the league family that believe in us and want to help keep the dream that Don Petersen started 71 years ago alive. That dream was to give the children in his neighbourhood a safe place to learn the game of basketball, and to learn how much fun being on a team can be. We remain committed to that dream.

To that family and all of you that continue to support what we do every night – Thank you.

St. Francis of Assisi Car Wash Results

Let me start this post by saying thank you to all of you in the league family that came out on Saturday to support the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Scool Car Wash. The purpose of the event was to raise money for their end of the year trip, and Mr. Paynes class decided to also donate 25% of their net proceeds to our basketball league.

I am thrilled to announce that this morning I picked up $343 from students in Mr. Paynes class as their donation to the league! Our thanks to all of you for believing in what we do for the children in our community. Please know that your commitment to giving up a good part of your Saturday will make an immediate difference in the lives of our 474 players and their families. YOU ARE DIFFERENCE MAKERS AND YOU SHOULD BE PROUD OF THAT.

Remembering Don Petersen

Yesterday, October 5th, would have been the birthday of our league founder Don “Pete” Petersen, so I thought, as we begin our second week of games in the league that he built 71 years ago, this would be a good time to pause for a few moments and say thank you.

Thank you Don for opening the back door at St. Pat’s school and calling the children playing there asking if they wanted to come in and play some basketball.
Thank you for recognizing that the children in your neighbourhood could have a safe place to learn the game skills, but also how valuable being on a team and contributing to the league as a volunteer would be for their life skills.
Thank you for instilling in your volunteers that if you are there as a volunteer, you are there for the kids, and not for any compensation.
Thank you for being a good listener, and a sounding board for so many children and adults over your lifetime when any of us just needed or wanted someone to talk to.
Thank you for being patient with the leadership you selected to manage the league, and allowing them to find their way in those roles with guidance but not interference.
Most of all, thank you for being a mentor and friend to countless people, both young and old, throughout your life. You were a life changer for some, and a constant companion even today. Yours is a life and a legacy worth celebrating every day, and a reminder that today’s volunteers, along with all that came before us, are difference makers in the lives of the players and the families in your league because you gave us the chance to be part of something special. Thank you for that chance Pete. Roland

Donations Update

Yesterday we received a very significant donation from Terry and Odessa Fraser and their families. Along with the donation was this message from Terry:

“I have been proud to be involved, in the past, in the Pete Petersen Basketball League, as a volunteer for over 40 years, as well as a previous member of the executive.

I have personally seen how much the league means to the boys and girls that attend. It continues to provide an affordable, safe and fun environment for kids. Our children and grandchildren have experienced the fun, the encouragement, welcoming and inclusiveness of the league. “Just for the Fun of It” is such a good quote for the league!

Please accept this donation to help the league continue making a difference in the lives of players and their families.

Sincerely, Terry Fraser and family”

The entire Fraser family have been long time volunteers and supporters of what we do for the children in the community, and we can’t thank them enough for continuing to believe in us. To all of you, please know you continue to be difference makers, and we are very proud of your involvement in what we do to keep Pete’s dream alive. Roland

Fund Raising Car Wash Tomorrow at St. Francis of Assisi!

Don’t forget that tomorrow, Saturday October 4th from 10 am until 3pm the students at St. Francis of Assisi will be having a fund raising car wash at the school to help raise money for their year end trip. They are also selling hot dog combo deals described in the poster below. 25% of the net proceeds from the event are also coming back to the Pete Petersen Basketball League, so this is a real chance to get behind the students at our host school and make a difference in the lives of our players and their families at the same time.
