We are frequently asked about whether or not there are additional practices nights during the week that families should plan into their calendars. There are not. Our focus is on games, and providing pre-game instructions for players. Here is what you can expect the first four weeks after registration:

September 14-17 – Player Evaluations – These are practices run in each division on the same night of the week that they will play the games. A schedule will be given to you at registration. The purpose of this night is to do a preliminary assessment of player skill level so that we can balance the teams. We are often asked if players get “cut” through this process. They do not. If you are registered you will be put on a team, even if for some reason you are not able to make this evaluation night.

September 21-24 – There is no activity for players this week. We have our coaches meeting on September 23 so players will hear what team they are on, and when their team practice is in the days following that meeting.

September 28- October 1 – Players will have a practice with their team on the same nights that their games will be played. ***When the coaches call please make sure to mark down the team that the player is on and the time slot for the practice. The practice will be 45 minutes long. Schedules will be handed out at this time.

October 5-8 – The season starts in all divisions. Schedules will be available as well on this web site, and can be sorted by division and team.

Costco Connection Magazine Article

Several times we have written here about a study being done with the league by Queen’s University the last two seasons. Jean Cote is the Queen’s professor that has been overseeing the process and Matthew Vierimaa is the graduate student driving the contact research with the league. The link below will take you to an article and debate in the Costco Connection Magazine for September / October that I hope you will find interesting. Many of the concepts described in the lower portion of the article are from our league, and give good description of our core philosophy.

A New Look

As you can see from the banner above this post the league web site has a new look thanks to our friends and supporters at iStorm. John Moore and his team have updated our banner, and have also added a drop down button for our “about” tab that will take you to a list of previous award winners up to 2003. In the weeks ahead we will be bringing this section up to date with the rest of the winners.

Don “Pete” Petersen Spirit Memorial Award

We learned yesterday that the family of Don Petersen has made the selection for the first Don “Pete” Petersen Spirit Memorial Award, and that person is Grant Hoekstra. They want to thank everyone that submitted applications for the award. Here is what the family said about the award for this year.

“Congratulations to Grant Hoekstra, the first recipient of the Don “Pete” Petersen Spirit Memorial Award

Grant Hoekstra has been a coach, score keeper and referee for the League Pete started.

Here’s what Grant had to say in his application:

The impact of volunteering has been enormous on my growth as a person. I see people enjoying their time at the events that I volunteer at and get a positive feeling and get encouraged to continue assisting others and dedicating my time towards maintaining a good cause for a fantastic organization.

I have always believed in the morals of the Knights of Columbus Basketball League. Therefore, playing, coaching and refereeing in the league have only enhanced my belief of having fun while competing. One of the objectives of the league is to make sure everyone is having fun, and I admire how each individual volunteer strives to bring a sense of fun to each player. I will take this outlook with me as I continue to grow and develop in my academic and extracurricular activities in my post-secondary education. As well, my involvement in the league has solidified my choice to go into Sport Administration/Management. The enthusiasm, teamwork and educational component I witnessed throughout my time with the league has motivated my passion to bring the outlook of the Knights of Columbus Basketball League into other organizations.

Pete would be so proud of you Grant ! “

FAQ #1: We are often asked by parents what they should do if they are going to be away for registration. Another friend or relative can register your child and you will then need to sign the permission form before the child can participate. Please do not ask members of our league executive to register your children for you. We have many jobs that need our full attention on registration day and we will have to tell you no when you ask.

More details, and answers to frequently asked questions will be coming in the weeks ahead. If you have questions requiring immediate answers, please do not hesitate to ask them by e mail or through the Facebook page or web site.

Whig Standard Article

The following story written by Patrick Kennedy, will appear in the Kingston Whig Standard tomorrow morning. It is available on line now. Our thanks to Pat for helping get the message on the league name change out to a wide audience!

Youth League Honours Late Founder

KINGSTON — The Knights of Columbus Basketball League, a fixture in the city’s sports community for six decades, has been renamed in honour of its founder. Beginning with Season 61 this autumn, the popular youth roundball loop will be known as the ‘Pete’ Petersen Basketball League.
“Can you think of a better way to cement Pete’s legacy?” league president Roland Billings asked rhetorically.
The decision to change the name was made at the league’s annual general meeting in May and announced last weekend on the one-year anniversary of Petersen’s passing.
Billings said the league executive wanted to ensure that Pete’s name and indomitable spirit live on.
“We wanted to make sure that future generations of players understand the legacy of the man who started the league,” reasoned Billings. “Pete was a tremendous influence on the lives of thousands of children and adults in the community.
“If you name a trophy after someone, after a few years it tends to lose meaning and it becomes just another trophy,” he added. “We wanted people, the second and even third generation of players as well as future volunteers, to realize who started it all.”
Added longtime volunteer Greg McAuley: “Five, 10 years down the line, when kids ask ‘Who’s Pete Petersen?’ we want them to know he’s the guy who got this whole thing going and who nurtured the rest of us.”
In 1955, Kingston native Petersen, a sports-minded caretaker at St. Patrick’s School, rounded up two ragtag teams to play a weekly game of hoops in the school gym. “It wasn’t long before we were running seven days a week,” Pete — Don was his seldom-used front name — told a newspaper pal on the occasion of the league’s 50th birthday in 2005.
Now in its seventh decade of playing ‘’just for the fun of it,” today’s setup features 38 teams, five divisions, 475 players and a volunteer force 100 strong – “the key to the operation,” noted the president.
“No one’s above anyone else and no one’s paid a dime,” said Billings, one of several selfless souls with 30-plus years of service. “Everything goes back to the kids. That’s the volunteer model Pete used, usually by barking, ‘Hey! Quit holding up that wall and grab a broom!’ ”
Pete, who died at age 77, once proclaimed, falsely, that his lone claim to fame in the league was that he “put the first ball in the air.” Given the founder’s unflagging humility, the name switch had to be a posthumous accolade.
“We knew Pete would never ever go for this,” Billings pointed out. “He was modest, self-effacing and would’ve fought this tooth and nail.”
(In a related item, around the time the league rubber-stamped the renaming, a deep rumble emanated from beneath the sod at St. Mary’s Cemetery.)
Pete might’ve objected, but he’d have been the only one.
“The reaction and response we’ve received has been extremely positive,” noted Billings.
The league with the new name will one day need a new venue, what with the cozy, cramped gym and St. Patrick’s itself slated to close at the end of the coming school year.
“We’ve been told we’ll have a spot somewhere,” a confident Billings reported.
That spot may well be the planned new separate school in Rideau Heights.
“We look forward to continuing our 60-year relationship with the league and are committed to its goals,“ said Jody DiRocco, director of education of the Algonquin & Lakeshore Catholic District School Board.
The school board big-wig also confirmed that the gym in the new school will be named after the jovial janitor.
Over at the Division Street graveyard, the subterranean rumblings grew in intensity.
