Thank You Graydon!

Sunday night Graydon Garrett, a former player home from university for the holidays, stopped around our house with a friend for a nice visit, and to donate a basketball that we will use in the Graduate Division.
Thank you Graydon for your generosity, your support, and thank you for continuing to believe in what we do. You are a difference maker, and I appreciate you taking the time out of your time home to help our program.

Happy World Basketball Day!!

The season that Don Petersen started our league,

the Syracuse Nationals beat the Fort Wayne Pistons 4 games to 3 to win the NBA Championship.

It was the season that saw the introduction of the 24 second shot clock, Bob Pettit was Rookie of the Year, Bob Cousy led the league in assists, and Bill Sharman shot 89.7% on free throws to lead the league.

In the same season, San Francisco beat LaSalle to win the NCAA championship.

In Ontario, Western University won the Provincial Men’s Championship for the 10th year in a row. They would win one more before Queen’s won their first title. 1962 would be the first year for a national champion.

A nice preamble to add some historical perspective. In our 70 years of operation lots has happened in the basketball world, and we have had lots of changes in our program as well, with expansion, restructuring, the elimination of playoffs, and the switch to our new home.

Throughout our history we have done our best to maintain the principles and vision that Don Petersen had when he started the league – to provide a safe place to learn the game, and how much fun it can be to be part of a team. We have also strived to keep the program affordable for families thanks to the support we have from the ALCDSB and donations made by local businesses and supporters.

To all of our league families past and present, thank you for your support. Savour the magic of this special time of year and enjoy the break before we start up again in January.

Mark The Date

Now that you have all likely been gifted, or soon will be gifted with a new calendar, mark Friday February 7th on it! Should you choose to use your phone, tablet, laptop or desktop, you can mark it there too!

On February 7th St. Lawrence College will be hosting our players, families and volunteers when the men’s and women’s basketball teams will be hosting La Cite in a double header with the women playing at 6 and the men at 8.

In conjunction with the games, St. Larry’s Pub will again be sponsoring a fund raiser for us, with details of that coming in the weeks ahead.

This is the latest example of the long partnership we have enjoyed with the St. Lawrence College administration and the Athletic Department. Thank you for believing in what we do for the children in the community and supporting that in your actions.

Donations Update

Yesterday we received a significant unsolicited donation to our program from Sean D. Sean is a former player that has brought his son to the league that he played in, and he has also joined us as a volunteer coach in the Little Guys Division.

Thank you Sean for believing in what we do for the children in our community. You lived Don Petersen’s dream as a player, and now you are helping keep that dream alive with your donation and giving back as a volunteer. You are a difference maker Sean, and we are grateful for that.

Disco Fever Night Results

The results of the Disco Fever Night are in! The total from the event and two donations is $960!

Our thanks to Nella Belcastro, Theresa Paloschi, and Anne Jennings for believing in us and for organizing this amazing event; to Chris Gencarelli and an anonymous donor for their contribution to the total raised; to the DJ’s that kept the dance floor full all evening; to the many businesses that contributed door prizes; and to the Italo-Canadian Club for being great hosts and putting on a delicious spread of food throughout the evening.

Events like this help us keep the cost of registration where it is, and help us keep Pete’s dream alive. We are lucky to have the support of the community each year.
