Just For The Fun Of It

Our shooting clinics wrapped up tonight with a visit from Coach Alyssa and players from the St. Lawrence College Women’s Basketball team coming to St. Francis of Assisi to work with players from our Little Gals and Girls divisions. Our thanks to SLC Head coach Taryn Turnbull for making it happen. The partnership that we have with both St. Lawrence and Queen’s is one that we value greatly and we will never take for granted. Tonight you made a difference in the lives of our athletes that they will remember for a long time. Alyssa, a special thanks to you for coming home to give back to the league. Our thanks to coach Nicole Barnard and her players from the Queen’s Women’s Basketball team for coming to St. Francis of Assisi last night to run a Shooting Clinic for our Biddy Division, and to Coach Barry Smith and the St. Lawrence College Men’s team for going to Cathedral to work with our Graduate players. All reports are that the night was a huge success. We are VERY lucky to have the relationship that we do with both Queen’s and St. Lawrence, and we appreciate the players and coaches taking the time from their studies and season preparation to spend time making a difference in the lives of our players. THANK YOU!

In our history we have been very fortunate to have developed close relationships with both Queen’s University and St. Lawrence College. That tradition continues next week, when both the men’s and women’s teams from both schools will be coming to our gyms to provide opportunities for our players to learn skills to help develop their shooting ability. We are very grateful for the players and coaches for taking the time from their season preparation to give back to the children in our league – a league some of them got their start in. We have had inquiries about where the player evaluations will be tonight. Player evaluations in the Little Guys, Girls, Biddy and Little Gals Divisions will be held at St. Francis of Assisi School. We apologize for any confusion. All practices and games for teams in all divisions except the Graduate Division will be at St. Francis of Assisi. Graduate practices and games will be at Ecole Cathedrale.

Our thanks to Susan, Nancy, Brenda, June, Nora, and the students in Pearl’s house for helping get all of the uniforms “clothes line fresh” for this season. Your commitment to the children in the league is greatly appreciated!

The Biddy, Girls, and Graduate Divisions are all full, as are the waiting lists so we are not taking any more names for this season.

One of the things we wanted to do for the 65th Anniversary Season of the league was to find a special way to pay homage to the league founder Don “Pete” Petersen. Over the summer we asked Ted Sheppard to create a sketch of Pete that we could incorporate into our T shirt designs for this season and we are thrilled with the result! Below is the art work by Ted and just before registration we will reveal the T shirt design and colour for this special season. Our heartfelt thanks to Ted for creating such a special tribute to the man that made all of what we continue to do possible

Each season we hold our Sneaker Draw Raffle and a fifty / Fifty Draw. Those funds are held in a special account to buy equipment for the league and we wanted you to know that this year we have used some of that money to buy one set of new uniforms for the Biddy Division, and to have trophy cases built and installed for our trophies at St. Francis of Assisi. This week we transferred our trophies to their new home. Our thanks to Principal Danny Finn and the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board for their help and cooperation in making this happen, to Chris Payne for his design work and project co-ordination, to DaCosta Millwork and Carpentry Shop for the cabinet build and Kingston Plate and Window Glass for the professional build and installation of the glass doors. Kudos too to the volunteers that came out this week to move , clean and position our trophies in their new home. Your commitment to the league is appreciated.
