Announcement From the ALCDSB

The following was just posted on the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board web site “On Sunday, October 6 the Minister of Education announced that a tentative agreement has been made with CUPE.

ALL ALCDSB schools will be open on Monday, October 7. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this time.

We look forward to welcoming all students and staff into our Catholic schools tomorrow.”

Based on that statement, we believe that the Community Use of Schools will also be reinstated tomorrow and our games in all divisions will resume as scheduled.

Don “Pete” Petersen

Today would be Don Petersen’s birthday, an appropriate day to remember the man that started our basketball league, and to say thanks for caring enough about the children in his neighbourhood to open the school, call them off the hill behind St. Pat’s, and give them a chance to play. That gesture of friendship and faith has grown into what we have today thanks to his leadership, his mentorship and the spirit of volunteerism that he gave all of us. He said that he could not imagine his life without the league. Neither can the people that he inspired, and the generations of children that have come through his gym doors in 65 years. Thanks Pete

Announcement from the ALCDSB Concerning Withdrawal of Services

The following was posted on the Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board web site this morning:”

“Community Use of Schools

Please note that all Community Use of Schools across ALCDSB will be cancelled commencing on Saturday, October 5, 2019 and will remain closed until further notice due to the withdrawal of services by CUPE.

Due to the current withdrawal of services, we are unable to provide staff to complete set up and cleaning following community rentals as this work falls under struck duties.”

As a result of this announcement, the Little Gals Division games will go ahead as scheduled tonight and then our schedules in all divisions will be suspended until further notice. Once the withdrawal of services is ended we will work with the school board to restart our program as soon as possible. Roland Billings

Ontario Volunteer Service Awards

Last night at St. Lawrence College the 2019 Ontario Volunteer Service awards were handed out to volunteers in our area and we were fortunate enough to have nine of our volunteers recognized at the event. Our recipients were Chris Payne, recognized for 45 years of service, Shawn Hollywood, Charlie Mignault and Lynne Mason for ten years each, Amanda Kyle and Cory Hollywood for 5 years and Emmitt Irwin, Madison Benoit and Kendra Platt for their service as Youth Volunteers. In total, 1499 year of volunteer service to our community were recognized last night, with our volunteers contributing 94 of those years. As Ian Arthur, the MPP for Kingston and the Islands pointed out, in Canada volunteers contribute the equivalent of 2 billion work hours annually to our country. We are very proud of all our volunteers and proud to have this group recognized by the province last night. For photos from the event, please visit our Facebook page.

Memorial Patches

As we begin league play tonight you will notice three memorial patches on uniforms in the league.

A PETE patch appears on all uniforms and is to commemorate the life and contributions of league founder Don “Pete”Petersen. Don started the league as a 17 year old caretaker at St. Patrick School and that commitment to the children in his neighbourhood has grown in to the 38 team program we enjoy today.

All of the Biddy Division uniforms also carry a MR patch in memory of, and to commemorate the contributions made to the league by Mike Robertson. Mike lived beside St. Pat’s, and spent his evenings at the gym in the role of referee for several divisions, but with a special attachment to the Biddy group. He was a huge supporter of our fundraising efforts and a significant behind the scenes contributor to our success.

The third memorial patch you will see on the Golden Gals uniforms in the Little Gals Division. These TVH patches are worn to commemorate the too short life of Trinity VanHeddegem, a player on the Golden Gals that passed away during her first season playing with us. The Trinity VanHeddegem Award is given annually at the banquet to a first year player in the Little Gals Division at the banquet.
