Thank You John Moore and the iStorm Team

This week while working on schedules for next season I was reminded again of just how much thanks we owe John Moore and his team at iStorm for setting up, supporting and maintaining our schedule system on the league web site. John’s insight into what a parent, coach or team follower would want to see has been a fantastic asset to all of us.

Thank you John. We value our partnership, and look forward to continuing the relationship. You and the team are difference makers!

Piercing Season is Rapidly Coming To A Close!!

We are fast approaching the deadline date if you are planning on getting any piercings and still hope to play at the start of the start of the upcoming season.

Conventional wisdom is that new piercings should not be removed for 6 to 8 weeks after the event, so with player evaluation practices scheduled for September 11-14, the last eight week date for a piercing before that is July 17 – 20, the six week date would be July 31-August 3.

The rules of basketball, not a Pete Petersen Basketball League rule, dictate that players may not participate with jewelry of any kind, so plan ahead to avoid disappointment this season.

The risk is very real, and I personally know a person that had an earing ripped out of her ear during competition, and taping over the new piercing is not permitted.

Remembering Don “Pete” Petersen

On July 3, 2014 Don Petersen, the founder of our basketball league passed away. For those that knew him, we lost a friend, confidant, mentor and sounding board. For the community, his passing left behind a legacy of caring for others, and a genuine love for the league and all the players that passed through his gym in the nearly 60 he was involved. He created the league that now has his name as a 17 year old when he was the caretaker at St. Pat’s. He wanted to give the children in the neighbourhood where he grew up a chance to play and learn the game, but even more importantly, the life lessons he taught the players about contributing and giving back to the game.

Everyone involved with bringing the league to you as we enter the 69th year since Pete opened the back door to the school and invited the children playing on the hill behind St. Pat’s to come into the gym, remains committed to continuing his legacy of giving children a safe and affordable place to learn to love basketball as he did.

Thank you Don for giving us that chance to make a difference as you did.

“The ultimate lesson to learn from the basketball league is to give back what you received. Not only in basketball, but more importantly, in life.” Don Petersen

Don “Pete” Petersen Memorial “Just For The Fun of It” Golf Event Results

On Friday June 23 we hosted our Don “Pete” Petersen Memorial “Just For The Fun of It” Golf Event at the Amherstview Golf and Country Club. 54 golfers took part in a round of golf with personal bragging rights on the line, that culminated in a nice meal and more chances to swap stories and modify performance results. Our thanks to all of the participants, and to all of the staff at the course for being so welcoming and well organized. The event raised $1318 for the league and that money will go directly to making a difference in the lives of our players this season. Special thanks to Rick Hollywood, Heather Hollywood, Gloria DeMatos and Rob VanHeddegem from the league executive for organizing the event that was enjoyed by everyone in attendance.

One footnote on the event. Doug Jeffries participated and I have to report that he is still in search of his elusive hole in one.
