Once again this year the St. Lawrence College Athletics Department is inviting players from our league to attend the home opening basketball games for the men’s and women’s teams, on Wednesday October 30, 2013, when they play the Durham College Lords . There will be a FREE Barbecue, with hot dogs, sausages, chips and sodas for our players. The women’s game tips off at 6 pm with the men’s game to follow. Admission to the games is FREE! The St.Lawrence basketball teams, and the entire athletic department are strong supporters of our league, and this is a chance for our players and their families to come out to show support for the Vikings program, and see some excellent basketball too. Our thanks to Herb Steacy and his staff for making this event happen – and for including us! Posters will be up in the gym this week as a reminder.

We have been asked to make this appeal by MacKenzie Curran, a 16 year old former player in our league. In August, MacKenzie was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome, a disease which now requires her to undergo a bone marrow transplant. With no family match, MacKenzie is appealing for male donors 17-35 years old to register with OneMatch, an organization that is connected with Canada Blood Services, at a clinic to be held at St. John’s Anglican Church, 41 Church Street in Portsmouth. The clinic will be held on Saturday November 2 from noon until 4 pm. By registering with OneMatch, you could be a hero to MacKenzie, or to one of the other 700 + Canadians that are in need of a bone marrow or stem cell transplant. We encourage anyone interested to please visit the One Match web site to understand the process and to be informed.

Starting this week, Players of The Week in the Little Guys and Little Gals Divisions will receive a Happy Meal Gift Certificate along with their Player of The Week certificate thanks to a very generous donation by Mary O’Neill Howlett and RKJL Foods, the parent company of McDonald’s Restaurants.
