Celebration Saturday

The 60th Anniversary Celebration Week culminated with a gathering at the Grizzly Grill for alumni and parents on Saturday night. A good time was had by all as past exploits on the court were revisited and memories shared. Our thanks to the Grizzly Grill staff for their service, looking after our logistical needs, attention to detail, and most of all your welcoming spirit! The service was excellent, and the food was praised by everyone.
Special thanks from the league go out to Laurie Leeman and Louise Frink for crewing the reception table, and to Mary Willing for crewing the sales table. Pete’s autographed basketball was fittingly won by Calista Payne – Pete’s great niece.
To see the special 60th anniversary posters created for the event visit our Facebook page.

Alumni Two-Ball Tournament

On Saturday November “Celebration Saturday” kicked off with an alumni Two-Ball Tournament at St. Pat’s, with eleven teams competing for the championship. Congratulations to Paul Medeiros and Matt Charlton on winning the championship trophy after cruising through the preliminary rounds with their Lawrence Welk shooting strategy (“a one, and a two”) and then going undefeated in the round robin portion. They survived a challenge from the consolation side winners Jeff and Doreen Hoekstra and from another team to remain undefeated on the day.
Thanks go out to the Trophy House for refurbishing the championship trophy, and to Guy White for donating the trophy. Thanks too to Lynn Mason and Stephanie Charlton for crewing the registration and draw desk, to Marg Millar for crewing the canteen, and to Liz Allport and Rick Hollywood for keeping score. To see photos of the teams and the trophy presentation go to our Facebook page.

Queen’s vs Waterloo Friday November 14

Last season Matthew Viermaa and other students from the Queen’s School of Kinesiology and Health Studies did a research project with our Graduate, Biddy and Girls Divisions. Matthew continues to work with the Biddy Division this season. As a token of appreciation for our support for their work, Matthew has secured 75 tickets to the Queen’s home opener November 14 against the Waterloo Warriors. Game time for the women’s game is 6 pm with the men’s game following at 8 pm. The convenors will have the tickets available on game nights in those divisions next week so if you are interested in attending please see them either before or after your game. They will be making announcements as a reminder on Monday.
Thanks to Matt for getting the tickets for our players. We appreciated the opportunity to partner with the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies on the study last season and we will continue to work with them in their future research.

Knights of Columbus Basketball League Week Celebrations Day 4

Thursday November 6 was celebration night in the Little Gals Division. The evening was once again sponsored by Bridget Walker – Payne’s State Farm Insurance, with Putt and Blast supplying vouchers to the Player of the Week winners to go along with the Happy Meal vouchers donated all season to the Little Gals and Little Guys Player of the Week by Mary O’Neill and McDonalds. Tata’s Pizza came through with pizza for the “Pete’s Best Seat In The House” winners and we want to thank all of those businesses for their support of our 60th Anniversary Celebrations.
The evening was kicked off with a tribute to former player and current Little Gals coach, Mary Jane Besselink – Bravakis (Isabelle’s mom). Mary Jane is a proud graduate of our program who went on to play at Regiopolis – Notre Dame and the University of Hartford. She is the seventh leading scorer all time at the school and is second in career rebounds, and is in the top ten in a number of statistical categories at the university. Mary Jane is also in the University of Hartford Hall of Fame and she captained the team in her Junior and Senior seasons.  We are fortunate to have Mary Jane continue to be willing to come back to the league to coach and give the current players the chance to learn from a great player and an even greater person. Mary Jane also tossed the ball to start the first game and took over from Charlie Potter as the best jump ball toss of the week.
The next celebration events will be on Saturday with the Alumni two -ball tournament from 1-4 pm at St. Pat’s and our Celebration evening at the Grizzly Grill from 6 -10 pm Saturday night. There is no charge for the Two-Ball Tournament, but there is a $10 fee for the evening celebration to help support the league.
