Rules Clinic

On Wednesday September 23 there will be a Rules Clinic for interested parents at St. Pat’s from 6-7 pm. We will review the essential rules of basketball that are used in the league, and answer your questions to clarify interpretations. This will not make you a referee, but it will give you good background to help you understand the game. It is recommended that all coaches attend this clinic since our coaches meeting happens right after. See you there!

We are frequently asked about whether or not there are additional practices nights during the week that families should plan into their calendars. There are not. Our focus is on games, and providing pre-game instructions for players. Here is what you can expect the first four weeks after registration:

September 14-17 – Player Evaluations – These are practices run in each division on the same night of the week that they will play the games. A schedule will be given to you at registration. The purpose of this night is to do a preliminary assessment of player skill level so that we can balance the teams. We are often asked if players get “cut” through this process. They do not. If you are registered you will be put on a team, even if for some reason you are not able to make this evaluation night.

September 21-24 – There is no activity for players this week. We have our coaches meeting on September 23 so players will hear what team they are on, and when their team practice is in the days following that meeting.

September 28- October 1 – Players will have a practice with their team on the same nights that their games will be played. ***When the coaches call please make sure to mark down the team that the player is on and the time slot for the practice. The practice will be 45 minutes long. Schedules will be handed out at this time.

October 5-8 – The season starts in all divisions. Schedules will be available as well on this web site, and can be sorted by division and team.

Costco Connection Magazine Article

Several times we have written here about a study being done with the league by Queen’s University the last two seasons. Jean Cote is the Queen’s professor that has been overseeing the process and Matthew Vierimaa is the graduate student driving the contact research with the league. The link below will take you to an article and debate in the Costco Connection Magazine for September / October that I hope you will find interesting. Many of the concepts described in the lower portion of the article are from our league, and give good description of our core philosophy.

A New Look

As you can see from the banner above this post the league web site has a new look thanks to our friends and supporters at iStorm. John Moore and his team have updated our banner, and have also added a drop down button for our “about” tab that will take you to a list of previous award winners up to 2003. In the weeks ahead we will be bringing this section up to date with the rest of the winners.

Don “Pete” Petersen Spirit Memorial Award

We learned yesterday that the family of Don Petersen has made the selection for the first Don “Pete” Petersen Spirit Memorial Award, and that person is Grant Hoekstra. They want to thank everyone that submitted applications for the award. Here is what the family said about the award for this year.

“Congratulations to Grant Hoekstra, the first recipient of the Don “Pete” Petersen Spirit Memorial Award

Grant Hoekstra has been a coach, score keeper and referee for the League Pete started.

Here’s what Grant had to say in his application:

The impact of volunteering has been enormous on my growth as a person. I see people enjoying their time at the events that I volunteer at and get a positive feeling and get encouraged to continue assisting others and dedicating my time towards maintaining a good cause for a fantastic organization.

I have always believed in the morals of the Knights of Columbus Basketball League. Therefore, playing, coaching and refereeing in the league have only enhanced my belief of having fun while competing. One of the objectives of the league is to make sure everyone is having fun, and I admire how each individual volunteer strives to bring a sense of fun to each player. I will take this outlook with me as I continue to grow and develop in my academic and extracurricular activities in my post-secondary education. As well, my involvement in the league has solidified my choice to go into Sport Administration/Management. The enthusiasm, teamwork and educational component I witnessed throughout my time with the league has motivated my passion to bring the outlook of the Knights of Columbus Basketball League into other organizations.

Pete would be so proud of you Grant ! “
