Milestone Event

Next Wednesday, October 5th marks the start of the 40th anniversary season of the Girls Division in our program, and we are planning a special ceremony to mark the occasion before the start of the first game of the season. If you were a player during that first season in 1982-83 or from those early years we invite you to come and join us at 5:45 pm October 5th at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School as we acknowledge and recognize the difference makers that helped make that division a reality 40 years ago- Joanie Besselink – Sagriff and Mary O’Neill – Howlett.

Jewellery

We thought it important as we get ready to resume play, that we once again clarify our position around the wearing of jewellery and basketball. The rules of basketball prohibit the wearing of any jewellery while participating in a game. This includes, rings, watches, necklaces, bracelets, earrings and body piercings.

The risk to player safety with all of these is very real, and examples of injuries resulting from players participating wearing jewellery are real as well. If the jewellery cannot be removed, or if you choose not to remove it, you cannot be permitted to play. It is as simple as that. This is a rule of basketball, not a Pete Petersen Basketball League rule, and we cannot knowingly set aside a rule that deals with player safety.

Research shows us that newly pierced ear lobes should have the stud left in place for 6-8 weeks, depending on how fast an individual heals. If your player has recently had a piercing done then they will not be permitted to play until such time that you as parents and caregivers deem it safe to remove the earrings prior to games. Taping over the ear lobe is not permitted so don’t ask us to set aside the rules of the game to do this.

Talk to your players about this to help them understand. If they still want to come to games to be on the bench with their teammates during this time period where a piercing cannot be removed, that is fine, but understand they will not be able to participate until you can safely remove the jewellery.

For piercings beyond the 6-8 week time frame, all research that we have found indicates no risk to the individual by removing the earring or stud.

If you are planning a piercing for your player, we suggest after the season would be a good time to plan that event.

Schedule For The Next Two Weeks and a Registration Update

Evaluation week has come to a close and we are now moving into the next phase of our season.

Next week there is no activity for the players as we get put the teams together and have our coaches meeting on the 21st. Players will hear what team they are on, and the date and time of their practice in the days following that meeting.

PLEASE NOTE: If you missed evaluation night but are registered in the league, or if you register in the next few days you will be placed on a team. Players on our waiting lists will need to wait for a call if there is an opening.

Each team will have a practice during the week of September 26-29. Graduate Division practices and games will be at Ecole Cathedrale, and all other division practices and games will be at St. Francis of Assisi. Schedules will be handed out at practices and can also be viewed on our web site.

Games in all divisions will start October 3-6.

REGISTRATION UPDATE

We still have 3 places left in each of the Little Gals (girls 8-10) and Girls (girls 11-14)divisions. My thanks to everyone that has been spreading the word over the last week to help get us to good healthy numbers in all of our divisions. In the boys groups, Little Guys is full, as is our waiting list, so we are not taking any more names for this season. The Biddy (boys11-12) and Graduate (boys 13-15) divisions are full, but we are still adding names to our waiting lists.

If you are interested in registering a player for either of the girls divisions , or adding a player to the Biddy or Graduate waiting lists, please contact us through Facebook messenger or by email at roland.billings@sympatico.ca.

Clarification

Last week we published the COVID 19 Protocols that will be in place for the upcoming season. We want to clarify that, while we encourage everyone eligible to be vaccinated do so, THERE IS NO MANDATE THAT PLAYERS BE VACCINATED BEFORE THEY CAN PLAY.

Vaccination requirements are in place as outlined for all executive members and league volunteers until such time as that is not required by the ALCDSB.

As stated in the protocols, they are “subject to change dependant on any specific decisions by the ALCDSB or the KFL&A Officer of Health regarding restrictions.”R
