Terry Millar

I am very sad to report that a former player and member of our league family passed away suddenly on the weekend. Terry’s mother Marg crewed our canteen at St. Pat’s for many years. Her children and grandchildren all played in our program, including Terry’s son Timothy. Our heartfelt sympathies to Marg, Angela, Timothy, Terry’s siblings and to his extended family and the many friends who along with us mourn his loss. His funeral arrangements are below.

Boys and Girls Club Program

We have been asked by David Krasna to share this information about sports programs being offered by the Boys and Girls Club. Please direct any questions about the programs to the Boys and Girls Club – this is not a Pete Petersen Basketball League initiative.

“My name is David Krasna and I am the Manager of Aquatics and Fitness for BGC South East (Formally known as Boys and Girls Club of Kingston). I am reaching out to you to promote our free sports leagues that will be running at our West End Facility at the Frontenac Mall.

Our Soccer league will be on Tuesdays from 6:00pm-7:00pm, running from October 18 – December 13th. They are open to anyone between the ages of 13-18. The first night (October 18th) will be a skill testing and team making night. Each of the following weeks will be league play. Each team will play 1 game a night. There will be games played between 6pm-7pm. Games will be 50 minutes long with 25 minute halves. The leagues will have 7 weeks of normal play and 1 final week for a double header playoff. The final night will run an hour longer for playoffs (December 13th, 6-8pm).

Our Basketball leagues will be on Thursday’s from 6:00pm-8:00pm, running from October 13th – December 15th. They are open to anyone between the ages of 13-18. The first night (October 13th) will be a skill testing and team making night. Each of the following weeks will be league play. Each team will play 1 game a night. There will be games played between 6pm-7pm and 7pm-8pm. Games will be 50 minutes long with 25 minute halves. The leagues will have 7 weeks of normal play and 2 weeks for playoffs.

We will be running both an intermediate and a recreational league for basketball, however just 1 all-skill inclusive language for soccer:
Recreational- This is meant for players that are new to basketball, looking to just play for fun, or those who are younger.
Intermediate- This is meant for players that are comfortable playing basketball, looking to play more seriously or those who are older.

To sign up for these leagues, the youth will have to make an account on recdesk. This will allow them to see the standings for their leagues, schedule and stats.
Here is the link to register: https://bgcka.recdesk.com/Community/Program?category=19

I was wondering if it would be possible for you to send this to anyone that may be interested and/or if you could post it onto your social media page.”

Girls Division 40th Anniversary Season Tip Off

Last night we had a special ceremony before the start of games to commemorate the fortieth anniversary of the establishment of the Girls Division in 1982. There were two students at St. Pat’s that were instrumental in getting that part of our program started- Joanie Besselink and Mary O’Neill. This season we recognize the significant contribution made by these pioneers and advocates, with a special patch on the uniforms of all players in our Girls Division. Sadly Joanie passed away earlier this year, but she was well represented at the presentation last night by her husband Rick, her son Ben and her siblings, Mary Jane and John. Mary and her husband were also on hand, with Mary tossing the ball to start the season.

One of the things that we as an organization wanted the families of our league to know, is that Joannie and Mary have had a profound impact on the lives of thousands of girls in our community in the forty years since they so convincingly made their case to Pete Petersen to start a Girls Division. We are proud that they and their extended families have stayed in touch with us, and been key contributors to the league since 1982. We are truly proud to call them part of our basketball family.
