Pete

It is with profound sadness that we announce that Don “Pete” Petersen, the founder of the Knights of Columbus Basketball League, mentor, confidant, brother, uncle and friend to thousands who knew him, died this morning. We were blessed to have his guidance for the entire time that the league has been in operation and as I was putting these photos together I thought of two quotes. The first exemplifies how Pete lived his life – “You make a living from what you get, you make a life from what you give”. In 1995 Pete was given the Paul Harris Fellow by the local Rotary Club. The motto “Service Above Self” fully describes the man he was.
The second quote is well known at times of remembrance – “to you with failing hands we throw the torch; be yours to hold it high.” It will continue to be the responsibility of the current and future leadership of the league to ensure that we hold true to the dreams and ideals of this great and humble man. There is a gallery of photos on the league Facebook page.

Update from Sarah Barnes at the World Championships

We just received this update from Sarah Barnes, Girls Division coach, travelling with the Canadian Women’s under 17 team at the World Championships. The photo referred to can be seen on our Facebook page.

Happy Canada day !

I am writing with a link you can watch the Canadian under 17 team play at the world championships. Tonight, 6 pm local, which is 12 pm/ noon in Kingston, we play the host, Czech Republic to finish up our first round of play. It’s a big game for the team, it depends how the rest of the championships will unfold. The crowds have been large (1000+ when Czech plays and a band!). The link is below, please pass this along to anyone who might be interested from Knights of Columbus. Games will be played all week, and you might be able to go back and watch some games using the link below.

Our first game against Hungary went into overtime, they are a team to watch for! Otherwise, US, France and Spain are always solid.

Donation

This week we received a donation to the league from the Regiopolis / Notre Dame basketball program. Coach Ed Kenney said “The Regiopolis-Notre Dame Panthers would like to congratulate the Knights of Columbus Basketball League on their 60th anniversary. The RND Panthers and the entire Kingston sports community have greatly benefitted from the “better players” and “better people” that have resulted from this wonderful organization. The Knights and their “Just for the Fun on It” attitude are a model for teaching the game of basketball and the game of life.”
We are very grateful for the donation, and for the support that Regi continues to give to our league.

Ontario Volunteer Service Awards

On Wednesday June 25 five volunteers from the Knights of Columbus Basketball League were among the many area volunteers recognized for their contributions to our community at a special ceremony at the Ambassador Hotel. In total there were 1575 years of service recognized by the province at the event, and 95 of those years came from our group. Congratulations to Jamie Turcotte (40 years), David Reid (25 years), Jolene Kirkpatrick (10 years), Fraser McArthur (10 years), and Jeff Bilow (10 years) for this well deserved recognition. The league is better for your involvement and we are proud of your contribution and commitment to the children of our community. Photos from the event are posted on the league Facebook page.

60th Anniversary Logos

We want to thank, and congratulate, Aryn McGaw and Megan Finn, two former players that volunteered to create the special logos that we will use for our 60th anniversary celebrations. Megan’s design will be the design used for our year end trophies to each player. She incorporated an old fashioned peach basket into the design as a tie in to our history and the executive thought that this design would be perfect for the individual trophies. Her design is now in the hands of the trophy designers so that the custom ordered trophies can be made. Aryn’s first design will be used for clothing sales and Player of the Week Awards, and her other design will be used on singlets that will be available for special order purchase in the fall. The bold design and the arrow shape pointing forward were two of the features that we liked about Aryn’s design, and the circular framing of the “60 Years “Just For the Fun Of It” “with the league name we liked for the singlet design. We want to thank both Megan and Aryn for their creativity and their patience as we worked with them to fine tune the designs in the last couple of months. Details about what will be available for purchase this fall will be coming in the weeks ahead as we ramp up for the celebration season. Photos of all three designs are available on our Facebook page.

60th Anniversary Season

This season marks our 60th year of operation in the city of Kingston, and all of us associated with the league are excited about this milestone year. We are planning several activities to celebrate the achievement, and we are focusing most of them during the week of November 3-8, 2014. On game nights that week, we encourage former players, coaches and helpers to come to the gyms on game nights to watch games and to visit the current players and organizers. With the upcoming closure of St. Pat’s, it may also be a last chance to come and see the place where you learned the game – and maybe share some memories with us.
On Saturday November 8 we are planning two events – a past player and helper Two-Ball Tournament in the early afternoon, and a reunion drop in gathering from 6-10 pm at the Grizzly Grill. There is no charge for the Two-Ball tournament, but we are asking for a minimum donation of $10 to the league at the door for the reunion drop in. More details and reminders for these events will de coming as we get closer to the reunion week, and as the season unfolds.
