Welcome Sarah Barnes

This weekend Sarah Barnes joined the executive of the basketball league. Sarah has been a volunteer with us since the 2012-2013 season as a coach and referee. She brings with her a long history of basketball experience, including work with the national team, but most of all, she brings a love of the game, and a passion for working with children. Thanks for joining us Sarah!

Volunteers Grow Communities Award

On Tuesday evening at City Hall, the Kingston Frontenac Lennox and Addington United Way and Investors Group recognized two organizations, five individuals and a youth volunteer with Volunteers Grow Communities Awards. We are proud to announce that the almost 100 volunteers from the Knights of Columbus Basketball League were recognized with an award as a community organization. Everyone involved last season, and anyone that has ever been involved as a volunteer with the league, should be proud of of this recognition. The photos below show the award and some of our volunteers that were able to attend the reception where the recipients were announced. Here is an exerpt from the article by Michael Lea about the awards that was in the Wednesday edition of the Kingston Whig Standard.
“The Volunteers Grow Community awards are held by the United Way Volunteer Centre to help mark Volunteer Week in Canada.
Held Tuesday night in Memorial Hall at City Hall, seven groups and individuals were recognized for their dedication and commitment to volunteerism in their community.
One of the groups honoured were the Intergenerational Community Health Volunteers, most of whom are in their 80s and 90s, who have volunteered in the city’s north end for past seven years to provide the Friendship Blooms program. They spend time with kids, youth and seniors in various programs and activities.
The second group was the Knights of Columbus Basketball League. An institution in the city, the league has 100 volunteers providing leadership and mentorship for 500 children aged eight to 15.
The individual awards went to Rick Farndon, a volunteer with the CNIB; Maddie Hogan, who volunteered at Rideaucrest and is now a volunteer at the Fairmount Home even though she was born with spina bifida and is in a wheelchair; Darrell Petite, who volunteers with the medical first responder unit at St. John Ambulance; and Matt Williams, who volunteers with Bereaved Families of Ontario. The special youth award went to Sadie Augustyn.”
Our congratulations to all of the people recognized. The community is a better place thanks to you!!

The online registration for our 2015 Vikings Basketball Summer Camp is open!!! Go to the site www.slcathletics.com to register.

Here are some things that will be part of the camp program:
The camp runs from 9am-4pm and is held in the SLC Gymnasium (located on campus off of Country Club Drive). We do have a Camp Head Coach will who run the events throughout the week, however we will also have some of our very own varsity basketball athletes who will coach the kids and work with them!

Some of the events that take place during the day and throughout the week are as follows:
-Skill Development session (dribbling, passing, shooting, defense, etc.)
-3 on 3 basketball games (they will be put into teams and will play games to compete against each other
-Fun camp competitions (Bump, Foul Shots, 2 Ball, Olympia, etc.)
-Guest speaker sessions (We have a couple guest speakers come in throughout the week to teach and focus on a basketball skill/fundamental with the kids)
– 5 on 5 games
*- There is also a lunch break every day. Everyone walks over to the SLC cafeteria together to eat lunch (some campers bring their lunch, and some bring money to buy a lunch… whichever you prefer).

Feel free to contact Richelle Morris at the college if you have any questions about camp. We hope to see your son/daughter on the court this Summer!!!

Congratulations to former players from the league Jenny Wright, Liz Boag and Greg Faulkner on being named OUA All Stars. Along with the All Star nods to these three players, Tanner Graham, also a former player, was named to the OUA All Rookie Team. Many of us involved have followed your careers through high school and into university. You should all be proud of this recognition of the hard work that you have demonstrated throughout your playing careers.
