We learned yesterday that the family of Don Petersen has made the selection for the first Don “Pete” Petersen Spirit Memorial Award, and that person is Grant Hoekstra. They want to thank everyone that submitted applications for the award. Here is what the family said about the award for this year.
“Congratulations to Grant Hoekstra, the first recipient of the Don “Pete” Petersen Spirit Memorial Award
Grant Hoekstra has been a coach, score keeper and referee for the League Pete started.
Here’s what Grant had to say in his application:
The impact of volunteering has been enormous on my growth as a person. I see people enjoying their time at the events that I volunteer at and get a positive feeling and get encouraged to continue assisting others and dedicating my time towards maintaining a good cause for a fantastic organization.
I have always believed in the morals of the Knights of Columbus Basketball League. Therefore, playing, coaching and refereeing in the league have only enhanced my belief of having fun while competing. One of the objectives of the league is to make sure everyone is having fun, and I admire how each individual volunteer strives to bring a sense of fun to each player. I will take this outlook with me as I continue to grow and develop in my academic and extracurricular activities in my post-secondary education. As well, my involvement in the league has solidified my choice to go into Sport Administration/Management. The enthusiasm, teamwork and educational component I witnessed throughout my time with the league has motivated my passion to bring the outlook of the Knights of Columbus Basketball League into other organizations.
Pete would be so proud of you Grant ! “
